We already covered a little about the different features that both Sony Digital Cinema and Cinemark XD theaters have, but let’s now compare those features head-on. XD vs Digital Cinema: Features Face to Face Thanks to the large screens stretching 70+ feet from floor to ceiling, XD often draws comparisons with another theater format, IMAX (you can check this article to see the differences between Cinemark XD and IMAX).Ĭinemark XD also uses 4K laser projectors, an Auro 11.1 channel surround sound system and has spacious and luxurious leather seats. XD stands for “Extreme Digital” and is a theater auditorium by Cinemark that was first unveiled back in 2009. Very luxurious, leather, reclining seats with both headrests and footrests Solid comfort, but seats lack true luxury Uses the Auro 11.1 channel surround sound system (older ones used 7.1 channel systems)Ĭinemark XD has both 2D and 3D movie projections Uses the Dolby Atmos 360-degrees sound system The auditorium uses Sony-manufactured dual-laser 4K projectorsĬinemark XD uses 4k laser projectors made by Barco In this article, we’ll compare the two to find out which has the better image, sound, comfort, and other features. Sony Digital Cinema and Cinemark XD (XD stands for “Extreme Digital Cinema”) are premium movie auditoriums in Galaxy and Cinemark movie theater chains. This is why we’ve written this comparison between Sony XD vs Digital Cinema to give you an idea of where you might get a better experience watching a movie. Today, with theater chains competing to get as many butts in the seats and offering different features in their auditoriums, it can be daunting to pick where to watch a movie these days. It’s also much more about the experience that you get while you’re there. Going to a cinema isn’t just about watching the latest blockbuster that everyone is hyping (although that’s definitely a part of it). What is the difference between digital cinema and XD?.XD vs Digital Cinema: Features Face to Face.I hope Funi import it, because I would buy the ever-living crap out of a 20-movie boxset with masters like these. I just hope we get that far, that it's done in 4:3, that it covers all three original series, and that they use the broadcast audio Funimation has.īut, we'll cross that bridge when we get to it, I think the main thing for now is drooling at this beautiful HD master of all the movies. I think the next logical step if this master of the movies does well enough is that they'll start work on remastering the series. Optical Japanese audio + no Ocean dub on Z movies 1-3 = not really my bag. Yeah, I've been holding off on the current release too Funi's BDs just aren't quite there for me. Do you think there's any chance of Toei remastering the original DB for streaming as well ? I've been holding off on buying their current Blu-Rays in hopes of something better and this looks as good as it'll ever get. If it's inevitable then hopefully Funimation will get their hands on it as well. It looks like they're not bending over backwards to try to make it looks like the cels, they're respecting the film texture, and the original cel photography, and just trying to get a really nice look out of it, and it looks astounding.Ījay wrote:Hopefully that's fixed for the inevitable home release. Since everything until about Z movie 13 was mixed in mono, the "Stereo mixes" of the ones before that that are known use stereo music, but mono SFX + voices), like that one of DBZ movie 11 that's made the rounds.Īs for the colours, yeah, as you say, not perfect, but goddamn is it beautiful. The real question is whether they'll uncover some of the mysterious stereo mixes(Well, semi-stereo anyway. Toei still have the original cinetape mag tracks for all the movies, so there should be no doubt that they'll fix the audio. Hopefully that's fixed for the inevitable home release. The only negative is that they're currently using optical audio on the streams, rather than the high quality audio available on the Dragon Boxes. From what I've seen, colour-wise they're not perfect, but what is? On the whole, what I'm seeing so far is an improvement over every other release.
